Using Apple TV Without Wi-Fi – Is It Possible?

Wireless internet has become a huge part of our lives in the last decade. Now, we can’t possibly imagine going back to a life without wireless internet and streaming video. Losing your internet connection is always a nuisance, especially when you’re in the middle of an important project, or while streaming TV shows and movies. If you use an Apple TV to stream content, it can be extremely frustrating when your internet isn’t working.

To use your Apple TV without having access to Wi-Fi, you can use either peer-to-peer Airplay or an adaptor. Contrary to what you may think, it is possible to use your Apple TV without having access to Wi-Fi, however, there are a few reasons why you wouldn’t want to.

In this article, we’ll discuss the relationship between Apple TV and internet connectivity, specifically how they work together. We’ll also review options for how to use your Apple TV (on Amazon), without the internet.  Using an adaptor or peer-to-peer Airplay is really quite simple if you know what you’re doing, so make sure you check out the section below.

How Peer-to-Peer Apple Airplay Works

Peer-to-peer Apple Airplay allows you to connect to another Apple device, like your iPhone or iPad, without the use of a wireless network. Basically, your iPhone or iPad becomes a temporary hot spot to create a link between itself and your television. Once this connection is made, your Apple TV can be used to do all of the same things that it can do with internet access. It should be pointed out that this option only works if you have a device that is made by Apple.

How to Set Up Peer-to-Peer Airplay Without Wi-Fi

Thankfully, setting up peer-to-peer Airplay is really quite simple, so just follow the steps below carefully and you’ll be on your way.

  1. Open your iPhone or iPad, or whichever device you would like to connect to your Apple TV. Go to your settings and open the network connections tab.  “Forget” all the Wi-Fi networks that are currently saved on your device. To do this, click on each wireless network individually.  There should be a “Forget this network” button underneath each individual network.
  2. Navigate to the same place on your Apple TV device and follow the same steps as above to forget all of the Wi-Fi networks that are currently saved on your Apple TV.
  3. Make sure the Bluetooth is enabled on both your smart device and your Apple TV.
  4. Now, when you open your iPhone or iPad,  go to the control center.  There is a button that you can click for “Airplay.” It looks like a small rectangle with a black triangle cutting into the bottom. When you press this button, your device will automatically start to look for other Apple devices.  Your Apple TV should pop up as an option for connection.
  5. Once you click your Apple TV, it will prompt you with the remaining steps to follow for a successful connection.
  6. When these final steps are complete, you will be able to use your Apple TV because it is connected to the network on your iPhone or iPad.  It does not need its own internet connection in order to function.

Using an Adapter

If peer-to-peer Airplay isn’t working properly, or you don’t have an Apple device to connect to your television with, there is another option.  There are adapters the Rumner Lighting to HDMI Adapter (on Amazon) that connect your phone or smart device to your television directly.  These adapters are cords where one end plugs into the HDMI port on your television and the other plugs into the charging port on your smart device.

Then, the network on your device can be used to access Apple TV without the use of wireless internet. The end that connects to your television will most likely be the same for everyone and it’s typically an HDMI plug. However, there are many different types of ports that cell phones use for their charging port.

With that in mind, you need to do a little research to find out which type of adapter you need for your specific phone.  For example, the recent models of iPhone or iPad use a lightning port, while other non-Apple devices may use a USB-C port.  This requires just a bit of research before buying, otherwise, you’ll wind up with something that doesn’t work.

Apple TV Connection Options

Obviously, with something like Apple TV, using Wi-Fi is the first and best choice.  To install an Apple TV, you plug it in and follow the prompts for an easy setup.  It will automatically connect with your home’s wireless internet connection for easy operation. However, if anything is true about internet service, it’s that it can be unreliable at times, and it can also expose your kids to inappropriate content (how to lock apps in our guide)

You may live in an area that doesn’t have easy access to wireless internet. Some of the major internet companies do not reach very rural or remote areas. You may also just not want to pay for wireless internet, since the price of it has increased somewhat in the last decade. In both of these cases, using peer-to-peer Airplay or an HDMI to Thunderbolt adaptor will work great for you.
