What Does The Red Heart Mean On Snapchat?

On Snapchat, certain users will gain emojis next to their names based on their activities with you on Snapchat. However, the one that catches most Snapchat users’ eyes is the red heart emoji since it can only appear next to one user at a time. So what does this red heart emoji mean?

On Snapchat, the red heart emoji signifies your #1 best friend on the platform. This user sends the most snaps to you out of anyone on their friends’ list and vice versa. Specifically, the red heart means that you have been #1 BFs for two weeks.

Other than the red heart emoji, there are two other heart emojis: the yellow heart and the pair of two pink hearts. Not everyone is going to know precisely what these emojis mean. Let’s go through the heart emojis in more detail and the other emojis you may see, so you can understand where you stand with your friends on Snapchat.

What Does it Mean When You See a Red Heart on Snapchat?

Snapchat has a system of emojis that will appear next to users’ names. These emojis symbolize a whole array of different things, from who you snap most to your friend’s birthday.

Remember that Snapchat assigns these emojis mainly based on how you interact with the person to whom the emoji is assigned.

When you look at someone’s Snapchat homepage, you will almost always see the red heart emoji over one user and only one user. This is the most common symbol that you will see on Snapchat, but what does the red heart mean?

The red heart emoji next to someone’s name means you have been best friends with that person on Snapchat for at least two weeks straight. To become best friends with a user, they need to be the person you send the most Snapchat messages to, and you need to be the person they send the most messages to.

Contrary to what Snapchat believes, this won’t always correlate to being the person you like the most on your list. However, it will let you know who you send the most snaps to and who they send the most snaps to.

How Do You Get a Red Heart with Someone on Snapchat?

As we mentioned in the previous section, to get the red heart with someone on Snapchat, you both need to be best friends for at least two weeks straight.

To become best friends with another user, they need to be the person you send the most snaps to, and you need to be the person they send the most snaps to.

However, what we didn’t mention in the previous section is the fact that there is a whole hierarchy of hearts that you can gain with your best friend. There is the yellow heart, the red heart, and the pink heart. But what do these all mean, and how do you get them?

The Other Hearts

All of the Snapchat heart emojis dictate that the user with the heart next to their name is your best friend, and the main distinction between the different kinds of hearts is how long you have been best friends.

So you begin with a yellow heart, which turns into a red heart, which then turns into a pink heart.

The yellow heart begins as soon as you get a new best friend.

Then, as we’ve already mentioned, if you’re best friends with another user for at least two weeks, this yellow heart turns into a red heart. Finally, if you’ve been best friends with another user for two months or more, your red heart will turn into a pair of pink hearts.

Essentially, if you want the red or pink hearts next to a specific user’s name, you need to send that person the most snaps out of anyone in your friends’ list. They also need to send you the most snaps out of anyone in their friends’ list.

It is also worth noting that you can only have one #1 best friend on Snapchat at a time, so if you ever have pink hearts with one user and then days later notice that you have a yellow heart with another, your pink hearts with that one user will be gone.

If you want to restore them, you will need to start over at the yellow heart with that user and keep it up for two more months until it turns into two pink hearts.

The Meaning of Other Emojis on Snapchat

As we went over in the first section, other than the three kinds of hearts, a whole variety of emojis can appear next to users’ names on Snapchat.

Let’s quickly go through a few of these so you can understand what they mean.

Baby Emoji

The baby emoji signifies that you have just become friends with this user.

This emoji is a baby, representing what will hopefully become a budding new friendship. However, for now, the friendship has only just started, so that will take time.

Smiling Face

This is one of the simplest-looking emojis, just a regular smiley face. This one signifies this user is one of your best friends. Each user on Snapchat has up to 8 best friends, but onlyone1 #1 best friend (the user with the hearts).

This is a friend to whom you send many snaps but not the most. They are someone you are good friends with, but not #1 best friends with.

Sunglasses Emoji

This emoji looks like a face wearing sunglasses with a smile. This emoji signifies one of your best friends (not your #1 best friend) is also one of their best friends. So basically, this emoji means you two are friends by association.

Smirking Emoji

This emoji looks like a smiley face with the smile off to the side, almost like they are smirking. The smirking face emoji means you are one of that user’s best friends, but they are not one of yours. Essentially, they send you a lot of snaps, but you don’t send them a lot of snaps.

Grimacing Emoji

This emoji is easy to identify as it is the only one with teeth. The grimacing emoji means your #1 best friend is also that user’s #1 best friend. Basically, you both send the most snaps to the same person.

Birthday Cake Emoji

This one is pretty self-explanatory. The birthday cake emoji means it is that user’s birthday today. So, therefore, this feature needs to be enabled by that user in the settings to show up on their birthday.
