Snapchat’s Red Heart Emoji: What It Means And How To Get It

One of Snapchat’s many quirky features is the long list of emojis that seems to appear randomly next to all your friends’ names. In reality, these emojis, which range from a grimace to a baby face, aren’t random at all. In fact, they tell you a lot about your relationship with your friends.

Snapchat’s red heart emoji means that you’ve been best friends with that user on the app for more than two weeks. Two users can get the red heart emoji by consistently sending the most snaps to each other for two weeks — or by directly customizing emojis via the Snapchat settings.

In the world of Snapchat, emojis symbolize friendship, connection, and hierarchy, helping you to determine whether your Snapchat vibes are on point. Let’s take a closer look at the red heart and what it means.

What Does the Red Heart Mean on Snapchat?

Phone with heart emoji

Each emoji on Snapchat represents a different level of friendship. If you see a red heart next to your friend’s name, then it means that you have been best friends on the platform for more than two weeks.

A red heart on Snapchat basically indicates that you and your friend have been continuously sending the most snaps to each other. Because of this, the app has presumed your best friends.

This is a shared emoji, so if there’s a red heart next to your friend’s name, then they’ll see a red heart beside your name as well.

Can You Have a Red Heart With More Than One Person?

You can have a red heart with more than one person, but keep in mind that you can’t have more than eight best friends at one time.

It’s also important to note that the red heart emoji will disappear if any one of you starts snapping more with someone else instead of each other. This can happen pretty easily if one of you stops using the app for a couple of days.

So, if you want the red heart to remain, make sure you consistently keep snapping each other as much as possible.

How to Get a Red Heart Back After Losing It

If you’re unable to continue your daily snap routine, then you’ll sadly lose the red heart. But don’t be disheartened if this happens, as you can easily get the enchanting emoji back. Here are two ways you can get your red heart back after losing it:

Method 1: Start Sending Snaps Again

You lose the red heart emoji when your Snapchat activity with your best friend isn’t as frequent as before. This probably means that one of you isn’t replying to the other’s snaps with the same zeal.

While you can’t add, replace, or restore the red heart, you can get it back by simply sending a lot of snaps and starting the streak back up again. Here are the things you’ll need to do:

  • Send a lot of snaps to each other instead of all your other friends.
  • Chat daily to keep the streak going.
  • Consistently repeat this process for two weeks straight.
  • Make sure you don’t skip even one day.

Keep in mind that getting the red heart back is a two-way process. You’ll both need to send more snaps than usual to each other and do all the other relevant stuff. You’ll only be able to get the emoji back if both of you work together.

Method 2: Customize the Red Heart Through Snapchat Settings

If the previous method seems too hard, or you can’t wait two more weeks to get the red heart back, you can customize the emoji through Snapchat settings by following the steps below.

However, before trying out this method, make sure you check which emoji is still left next to your friend’s name. Here’s what you need to do:

For Android Users

  1. Launch the Snapchat app.
  2. Tap on the bitmoji or the profile icon in your screen’s upper-left corner.
  3. Tap the Settings icon located in the upper-right corner.
  4. Scroll down until you find Customize Emojis.
  5. If there’s a smiley emoji or any other emoji next to your friend’s name, select that emoji, and change it to the red heart.

For iOS users

  1. Launch the Snapchat app.
  2. Tap on the bitmoji or the profile icon in your screen’s upper-left corner.
  3. Tap the Settings icon located in the upper-right corner.
  4. Tap ‘Manage.’
  5. Tap ‘Friend Emojis.’
  6. If there’s a smiley emoji next to your friend’s name, select that emoji, and change it to the red heart. This will give you back your red heart!

What Does a Yellow Heart Mean?

Snapchat Yellow Heart

A yellow heart means that you’re #1 best friends with each other. That person sends you the most snaps, and you keep sending the most snaps to them.

Keep in mind that the yellow heart will appear next to your friend’s name for only two weeks. If, after that time, you’re still best friends, then the yellow heart will turn into a red one.

What Do the Pink Hearts Mean?

The pink hearts mean that things are getting pretty serious, and you’ve been best friends with each other for more than two months. This is the Super BFF emoji and is Snapchat’s ultimate stamp of approval for your friendship.
