How to Use a Bluetooth Microphone on an Xbox One

Wires are nearly a thing of the past. These days, you can go completely wireless with your gaming set up using a Bluetooth controller, Bluetooth mouse, and Bluetooth keyboards. So why not ditch the wires on your headset too? Is it possible to use a Bluetooth microphone on your Xbox One?

You can only connect a Bluetooth microphone to the Xbox One if it’s part of a wireless headset compatible with Xbox. While the Xbox is using a standard very close to Bluetooth for this data transfer, it’s proprietary, meaning you can’t use a generic BlueTooth mic/headphones with the console.

The Xbox One works on an exclusive Bluetooth-type standard called Xbox-Wireless. And thus far, its Bluetooth audio support is limited to just a few headsets. But all is not lost; there are a few ways to enjoy wireless freedom with your Xbox One console. Let’s find out how to use a Bluetooth microphone on an Xbox One.

Can You Use a Bluetooth Microphone on an Xbox One?

The answer is both yes and no. It’s a no if you’re looking to connect a standalone Bluetooth microphone. None of them would work, as the Xbox One doesn’t have the functionality to support Bluetooth audio.

However, if your microphone is part of a wireless headset, you might have what you need — but it depends on the headset’s compatibility. Regular Bluetooth headphones may work with some workarounds but no guarantees.

How Can You Use a Bluetooth Mic on an Xbox One?

You can only use a Bluetooth mic on an Xbox One if it comes as part of the wireless headset. Then your options further depend on the type of headset you have.

If you have an Xbox Wireless-compatible headset that’s also Bluetooth compatible, it can directly pair with the Xbox console like a controller. Here’s a quick look at pairing your headset:

  • Start by turning on your headset and console.
  • Press and hold the pairing button on your headset until you see the LED start flashing.
  • Now press the pairing button on the console.
  • Once paired, the LED on your headset will turn solid.

Your headset is now ready to be used with your Xbox One console. You may have to go through some on-screen prompts to finalize the setup.

Meanwhile, if you already own some expensive Bluetooth headphones that you’re not willing to ditch, there’s still a way to connect them with your Xbox console. Let’s find out how.

Pairing Non-Compatible Bluetooth Headphones

If you have regular Bluetooth headphones that aren’t compatible with Xbox Wireless, you’ll need a Bluetooth adapter (on Amazon) to plug into the 3.5mm audio jack on your controller. The adapter will establish a Bluetooth connection between the controller and headphones.

The pairing process is similar to the one we’ve seen earlier; you’ll just pair the headset with the adapter instead of the console.

However, there is a catch: This method only works for audio output, and the headset Bluetooth microphone might not work. In this case, you can get a Bluetooth adapter with a built-in mic.

Plenty of them are available in the market; just make sure to buy a reputable one. Again, no guarantees of it working perfectly, and what’s the use of a USB microphone for Xbox One if you can’t enjoy the audio quality and freedom of Bluetooth?

These were the two possible ways to connect a Bluetooth microphone to an Xbox One directly. But we also have another rather indirect method that can help you use your wireless microphone headset for party chat.

Connecting With Party Chat

Download the Xbox app on your smartphone and sign in with your Xbox Live account. Connect your Bluetooth headset to the smartphone and join a party chat using the app.

This way, you’ll be able to talk to your friends using a Bluetooth headset while playing games on your Xbox One.

But remember, this method only supports party chat, and you won’t be able to hear game audio on your Bluetooth headset.

Similarly, you may also use a Bluetooth microphone while using a PC as an end-user device. For that, you can use either tether your Xbox and PC together through the Xbox companion app or over a local network.

Xbox Wireless Headset and Compatible Options

After its propriety Bluetooth standard, Microsoft released its own wireless gaming headset last year. The Xbox wireless headset is probably your best bet to get the most out of your Xbox One console.

It offers great features, has a comfortable design, and delivers excellent audio quality. Plus, you can customize the sound profile using the Xbox Accessories app.

The headset is also compatible with Windows 10 devices and mobile phones. Moreover, Xbox wireless headsets are pretty affordable too.

Other than the official Xbox wireless headset, some third-party wireless headsets also support Xbox wireless standards. If you’re looking for some compatible options, here are a few to consider:

  1. Turtle Beach Elite Pro 2 Headset (on Amazon)
  2. Lucid Sound LS50X (on Amazon)
  3. Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 2 (on Amazon)
  4. Kingston HyperX Cloud II Headset (on Amazon)
  5. Razer Thresher (on Amazon)
  6. SteelSeries Arctis 9X (on Amazon)
  7. HyperX CloudX Flight (on Amazon)
  8. Astro A50 Wireless Headset (on Amazon)

It’s a bit disappointing that such a popular gaming console like Xbox One doesn’t have native Bluetooth audio support. But fortunately, there are still some ways to get around this problem.

The issue may not be entirely resolved, but at least you can now use a Bluetooth microphone with your Xbox One console.
